If you’re unfamiliar with the canon of Stephen Elliott, get familiar. He’s one of us: smart, kinky as hell and a diehard femdom enthusiast. The courage with which he lives his life is truly inspiring, and I’m not just referring to his “coming out” as kinky to the public. He’s an artist, an activist, and a pretty prolific writer who has refused to be intoxicated by heady pipe dreams of commercial success, which in so many cases dampen the very creative spirit that they are meant to be cultivating.

Stephen’s most recent creative venture is filmmaking. He wrote the acclaimed memoir The Adderall Diaries, which was then turned into a movie by James Franco. Every writer’s dream come true, right? Wrong. And Stephen made a movie about the experience, called After Adderall, and independent feature that pulls the curtain back on a pretty unglamorous side of filmmaking that most of us moviegoers don’t see. Watch the trailer – it’s hilarious!

As you can guess, a movie about why James Franco is a dick might not necessarily play well at some of the larger, Hollywood-laced, politically-driven festivals, so Stephen started the invitation-only Rumpus Lo-Fi Film Festival to subvert the submission fee-driven film festival system entirely.

After Adderall just had its world premiere in LA on July 30, but it will be showing in New York September 12 at the Brooklyn Book Festival at Videology in Williamsburg. I’ll be there, front row, and you’re all welcome to join me.
